On March 22nd, The Shoot hosted a Photo Challenge, designed to help our newer members get more comfortable in front of a lens, sharpen their skills, and most importantly, have fun pushing creative boundaries.
The event kicked off at Bar Rua in Dublin City, where everyone gathered. Our goal was simple: get everyone moving, thinking, and working together in new ways.
To spark that energy, we began with a quick icebreaker, then split everyone into teams of five. Each group was assigned one of seven challenges, which were designed to be clear enough that one can guess the concept but vague enough to allow room for imagination. The themes included:
Shadows
Expressive Arms & Hands
Dramatic Hair
Reflections
Cinematic Walk
Raw Emotion / Close Ups
Freeze Movement
With just one hour to shoot, teams spread out across the nearby streets like William Street and Drury Street and set off to complete the challenge. It was great to see so many people get stuck into the challenge and have the participants scouted locations, make quick decisions about their next ideas, help direct poses, and snap their best shots under time pressure.
Once the hour ended, everyone returned to Bar Rua to begin the next phase: editing. With another hour on the clock, teams had to curate and polish their final images for submission. The added time constraint made things even more exciting and intense.
The results? Absolutely phenomenal. The skill level and storytelling that came through each submission exceeded all expectations. Choosing a winner wasn’t easy, but one team rose to the top (scroll to the bottom to see the winners).
This challenge wasn’t just about competition, but it was about growth and teamwork. We’re so proud of what everyone achieved and can’t wait to do it all again soon.
We went around the room and asked attendees to tell us what they thought about this event. We love that the community is not shy to tell us what they think and how we can do better. Your feedback is always appreciated and helps us improve with every event.
Here’s what some of our participants had to say:
"It was good event to meet people. More like this in future."
